He helps his father, a cobbler, mend shoes in his spare time while his mother stitches rags to support the family, but financial hardships have not stopped Abhishek Kumar Bhartiya from passing the IIT entrance exam with flying colours. Abhishek, who secured rank 154 in the SC category, now wants to propel his dreams by pursuing aerospace engineering at IIT-Kanpur.

Thanks to those who attended and contributed to making the PanIIT event at Chicago a success more than ever before. IIT Roorkee's presence was not only evident through its leadership, but also by the number of attendees, which went up to about 150 from about 40 at any such previous conferences. We missed those who could not make it.

FEAR OF GETTING A SUPPLEMENTARY

In the ‘60s, one thing Thomasonians were really scared of was failing in a subject. Anyone who got less than 33% marks in a subject got what was known as a supplementary. In other words, a second chance to clear the subject in which he had failed.

Roorkee University had a beautiful campus spread over an area of 350 acres. While the University office, departments, library and club were located at the centre of the campus, most hostels were on the periphery, making it necessary for students to have some kind of transport for moving around. The average distance travelled by a student, if he was attending all classes and workshops, could be anything between 6 to 8 kilometres per day.

In a short span, the IIT Roorkee Heritage Fund (IITRHF) has been very successful in kick-starting a whole bunch of activities for the IIT Roorkee ecosystem. Right from launching a website, pledging funds, organizing a business plan contest, to organizing Pan IIT events (activities in Year-2008, Year-2009), we've gone a long way to realize the Heritage Fund dream.
